Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family as they defend the largest contiguous ranch in Montana. It ran for 5 seasons on Paramount Network and became a real hub for country and Americana music.
The Duttons, and how the show ended
Yellowstone premiered June 20, 2018 and concluded December 15, 2024, after 5 seasons and 53 episodes, with Kevin Costner leading the cast as patriarch John Dutton III. In May 2023, Paramount announced Costner would leave after the first half of Season 5, widely reported at the time as a scheduling conflict with his own film projects. The back half of the final season aired without him.
The Dutton story didn't end there. The franchise had already spun off two prequels, "1883" and "1923," and continued in 2026 with "Marshals" and "Dutton Ranch." Creator Taylor Sheridan publicly ruled out a rumored "6666" spinoff in August 2026, saying flatly he would never do that spinoff.
A real hub for country music
Unlike a lot of shows that borrow a country song for a trailer, Yellowstone built country and Americana artists into the show itself. Ryan Bingham plays ranch hand Walker and has roughly 15 of his own songs used across the series; Lainey Wilson also has an acting role and features on the soundtrack, alongside music from Chris Stapleton and Kacey Musgraves.
Why "Yellowstone" keeps turning up in country radio articles
If you clicked through from an article that only mentioned Yellowstone in passing, here is the connection: creator Taylor Sheridan also executive produces CBS's 2026 singing competition "The Road," alongside Keith Urban and Blake Shelton. Articles about that show often mention Sheridan's Yellowstone credit, which is likely how you ended up here.
